Dell's Software License Policy: Dude, you're getting screwed.

Dell's Software License Policy: Dude, you're getting screwed.: "I've never agreed to those Terms and Conditions, to my knowledge, but I assume they think they're enforceable, so I can't open up the shrinkwrap to see if the license agreements are in there, without automatically agreeing to them.]

Comment: And this is just the tip of it, this is most excellent. We're getting screwed from all sides. I think it's time some people start doing what those two have done, return the computer...I'm sure Dell will address this issue, when it reaches the appropriate hierarchical level...We're all a little too lemmings. When we're not, we're pain in the butt, what is going to be? With Big CO getting bigger every day that goes by, they will just bully us wherever they want if we don't put up a fight once in a while...we have to be be responsible consumers, in this case it means being a pain in the rear. It makes me think of this teacher at University, whom I didn't particularly like, but that's beyond the point, anyhow he went to great lenght to exlpain us it was our duty to make sure we revise our respective grocery bill and for any overcharge the cashier might have done, whatever the amount, report it back, do not to let them get away with it, because this is reinforcing the system/behavior the wrong way."

WikiTravel

Social Software: "Wikitravel.org is a new collaboratively developed world-wide-travel-guide. A wonderful use of wiki technology, inspired by Wikipedia.

Comment: We were just talking about WIKI here at work. How we have had some form of wiki tools kicking around earlier. I said I didn't understand WIKI, but then Francis said it's amasingly good at filtering the crap out for a collaboration tool. It's kind of a "socialist" about.com kind of thing where the experts in the topic maintain the content they love..."

Comment: Ok the jury is still out on this site. I was brought there by Amazon's Web Services newsletter. They gave a pointer to the RSS article, very basic RSS but in the ctx of an intro I thought was well done. Since I don't know much about the .Net side of ASP.net and winforms, but I plan too shortly, it's good to keep it around."

Wired News: Wi-Fi Rides California Rails

Wired News: Wi-Fi Rides California Rails: "PointShot Wireless, a Canadian company that is providing ACE with Wi-Fi equipment, said another California commuter rail line from the Sacramento suburbs to Oakland and San Jose plans a similar trial. PointShot has already set up a system for train riders between Montreal and Toronto. Virgin Trains also expects to announce Wi-Fi service plans for its London-area commuters later this year.

Comment: Wow PointShot is really getting some good press out of this Sillicone Valley trial...Again kudos!!"

Career Calculus

Eric.Weblog(): "I've known and worked with lots of developers, and I have noticed one thing which separates those with great careers from everybody else. Developers with outstanding careers understand a secret that seems to elude the majority:

Comment: Very good, read on...Especially with the overseas threat it's important we all understand this Eric's equation very well"

Computerworld

SCO's McBride: IT world backs SCO in its fight with IBM - Computerworld: "'I believe that the silent majority is actually behind SCO in this case,' he said. 'Others with [intellectual property] they want to protect, they are hoping that SCO is going to prevail. We've been called into the fight, and we're not backing down. We continue to gain in credibility.'

Comment: This guy is mixing up the whole thing. It's obvious if you have IP you want to protect it. You have to have IP to start with, or be able to show you do. Let's see this whole thing in court."

Ottawa Capital Network

Ottawa Capital Network: "

Comment: I read about this network a few times in the past, a link to it for my longterm memory. Look at the numbers in term of funding this year versus last, which was already a bad year. If the trend stay the course, which it should, it would put us at 158M for the whole year, while last year was 734M, this is 5X less $$$."

Gizmodo : Review of the new color BlackBerry

Gizmodo : Review of the new color BlackBerry: "MSNBC review of the new color BlackBerry, the 7230, which has finally reached these shores. Reviewer Gary Krakow gives it high marks, saying that its color screen is 'terrific' and that, '[u]ntil someone comes up with something better, RIMs BlackBerry 7230 now sits at the top of the roost for wireless PDA/phone/email devices.'

Comment: Not if you're in the situation we are in here at Macadamian. We don't use exchange, and we use act! as our salesforce tool. With the RIM when replying there is no way to specicy a return to e-mail address with our service provider (Rogers), and there is no way to sync the RIM with Act 6.0 out of the box, all co included in this mess are finger pointing, Rogers, Act, Rim, Puma Tech. Now I'm a Thungsten|w user, it syncs with act and I have wireless e-mail. I don't use the phone since it's badly integrated, and I still miss the well designed RIM interface, the fact that you don't needs two hands to get things done kind of thing. With all its little problems, I still think my new device is making my life easier just for the act syncing."

Wi-Fi to ride California passenger rails - Computerworld

Wi-Fi to ride California passenger rails - Computerworld: "Allison said that PointShot Wireless, an Ottawa-based start-up focused on providing Wi-Fi service in mobile markets, will provide the equipment for the Capitol Corridor test. PointShot is also providing the onboard hardware for a four-month test of Wi-Fi service that began last month on trains operated by Via Rail Canada in the Montreal-Toronto corridor (see story).

Comment: Most excellent! Way to go PointShot!"

Comment: For those of you who about Ronald, and Correcteur 101. First he was ateacher, then a successful entrepreneur building up Cognicase from nothing then forced to sell out to CGI by its biggest shareholder Banque Nationale. Documens is the creator of the Correcteur 101 software, which was the defacto standard for a while in the early 90 to 95. It's kind of cool to see this news today, maybe he will turn it around. The shareholders are fighting right now, they're in court, the founder is suing the investors...VCs to be continued."

BBC NEWS | Technology | Smart mob storms London

BBC NEWS | Technology | Smart mob storms London: The latest New York flash mob caused consternation in the Toys R Us store where flash mobsters gathered for their sixth outing. Participants were told to stare fixedly at the store's giant animatronic dinosaur for three minutes then fall to their knees and react to its roars by moaning and cowering for another four minutes.

Comment: When you've got nothing to do, can't you find something better to do I hear my mom say!

Joel on Software - Rick Chapman is In Search of Stupidity

Joel on Software - Rick Chapman is In Search of Stupidity: "There are still scads of programmers who defend Netscape™'s ground-up rewrite. 'The old code really sucked, Joel!" Yeah, uh-huh. Such programmers should be admired for their love of clean code, but they shouldn't be allowed within 100 feet of any business decisions, since it's obvious that clean code is more important to them than shipping, uh, software."

Comment: ;-) BTW read the whole thing it's a good one.

Another one ...

I'm missing one that I thought I should investigate. It's logo is kind of the one like Napster. I'm pretty sure it was used by Assembla but I can't seem to put my mouse pointer on it!

SCO Sets Linux Price: $1,399

SCO Sets Linux Price: $1,399: "The company on Tuesday set a price tag on the open-source OS: the 'SCO Intellectual Property License for Linux' will cost $1,399 for single-CPU servers. The company said an introductory server price of $699 for one CPU will be available though Oct. 15.

Comment: Bouaaahhh! Did I scare you...I'm sure not as much as this SCO news. Can somebody point me to something I can go to to express my dissatifaction to SCO and give my support to Linux?"
